We said we'd get over 10,000 signatures and we already had, if you include those collected on paper. But now we've hit that target online too. Brilliant! We are sending a clear message to Newcastle City Council about how much we, the people, value Newcastle City Hall.

      City Hall campaign concert held

Quote from Martin McAloon, Prefab Sprout:

"My first gig was Wings in 1975 at Newcastle City Hall. I had a broken neck and McCartney dedicated My Love to Super Mac - priceless! Blondie supporting Television and Bowie playing keyboards for Iggy Pop – these memories were also aspirations.

The audience at the City Hall were always the "fifth member" of any band performing and as a member of a four piece band, Prefab Sprout loved playing the City Hall.

Over the years we met a ton of musicians and bands, in recording studios, hotel bars, TV and radio stations around the world – their reference point for Newcastle and the North East of England, was always Newcastle City Hall – it’s on a par with the Angel of the North as a cultural ambassador and regional icon. Bands come and go and that’s the nature of the music industry, but the City Hall is the glue that binds generations and creates tradition. If you remove the benchmark of success, you remove the focus of aspiration."

      Oh dear, Cllr Nick Forbes.

Yesterday you said in response to our petition, "People should be in no doubt that City Hall will continue to act as one our most valued and historic venues for the foreseeable future while we try and secure a long-term sustainable solution for it."

TODAY, you have said on BBC Radio Newcastle, '...there's planned to be a new conference centre next to the Sage... we think that the City Hall will have less bookings. We don't think it has a long term future... at least the building's safe.'

It looks like our fight to keep Newcastle City Hall as a performance venue is still very much ON. We are adding Nick Forbes' email address back onto the petition so that he gets a notification each time someone signs it.

It's a crucial part of the cultural fabric of the North east. To even *contemplate" closure, in a context where live music is booming, is cultural vandalism on a massive scale!
