Let the Sports Basement in the Presidio remain in its current location. 

 

The Sports Basent provides a strong community anchor. Besides selling sporting goods, the Sports Basement is a well know center for meetings, group exercise starting points, emergency bathroom breaks. They fill an important niche that could not be replaced by any community center envisioned by the Presidio Trust. 

 

Apparently the Presidio Trust is trying to move or potentially close Sports Basement to make way for a cultural center the details of which are unclear. 

 

Sports Basement's future is now uncertain, please sign the following petition and join us on Monday to support a business that actively promotes, provides service and supports fitness life style choices that make San Francisco special.

 

• Sports Basement's current Location and parking lot allow access for persons participating in cycling, running, swimming, Cross fit, Windsurfing, kite boarding, surfing and Kayaking.

• Sports Basement creates jobs, offers recycling and committee space

• As meeting place Sports basement simulates other business in the Presidio 

• Allows philanthropic groups a central location including but not limited to Team in training, AIDs and various Walks. 

• Shows and encourages environmental sensitivity by reusing and recycling everything from the second hand furniture used as display supports to the building itself, which still retains the old commissary wall painting and structure.

Right now, the Presidion Trust has already told the Sports Basement that they must find a new location. The Presidio Trust wants to build a community center, but  we argue that the Sports Basement provides this space, and already encompasses values such as community togetherness, environmentalism, strength of family - values that the Presidio Trust will cite as a reason to create their own center. 

 

 

 

Furthermore, there are plenty of places where a new community center could be created, if the Presidio Trust really wanted to create their own center. For example, Officer's Club or other building around the Parade Ground, or one of the many already vacent buildings within the presidio. 

 

 

 

To the residents and visitors of San Francisco, the Sports Basement is more than a retail location. It is a thriving positive center of activity that helps families and individuals feel inspired and at home in our wonderful city.
