Revise IDSA Guidelines for Lyme disease

The Issue

PLEASE NOTE: There is an option next to "State/Country" for inside or outside US. Please select your correct option.

Countless Americans suffer from the chronic form of Lyme disease and its co-infections. It is very difficult to get treatment after the current IDSA guidelines of a 28-day regimen of antibiotics. It is even more difficult to get health insurance companies to pay for treatment after 28 days as IDSA does not recognize chronic Lyme. The tests for Lyme disease are inadequate and often result in false negatives in persons who have been infected for extended periods of time. The symptoms can be widely varied among individuals, and multiple systems may be affected. In the absence of proper diagnostic tests to accurately identify Lyme disease and its co-infections, we ask IDSA to revise its guidelines to include the option for antibiotic treatment extending beyond 28 days if the prescribing physician makes a clinical diagnosis that it would be in the best interest of the patient based on presenting symptoms, history and response to medication.
