End Animal Cruelty at UR Student Events

The Issue

How would you feel if you traveled in tiny cages, were put on display, and touched by strangers? Would you prefer other forms of entertainment instead of the petting zoo? The llama and baby kangaroo were cute at the petting zoo on D-Day and so were the Huskies during Winterfest Weekend, but what are their living conditions like behind the scenes and during their 30 minute car ride here to the University of Rochester?

One study found that after tigers were transported even briefly, their cortisol levels, which indicate stress, increased as much as 482% and remained elevated for nearly 2 weeks.

No government agency can effectively regulate or enforce the humane treatment of animals that are continuously on the road, even though the Animal Welfare Act require little more than that exhibitors provide animals with sufficient food and water and enough room to stand up, turn around, and lie down.

Please sign this petition to remind the UR student body that it is important to create alternative student activities that don't involve animals, or use reputable petting zoos. The purpose of this petition is not to condemn previous events, but to help shape future events. CAB expressed that they would work with the UR community if people are passionate about this cause. Sign this and make a change!

This petition ends Saturday, May/12, but we still need more signatures. Share this with your clubs, friends, and families - we can do this!
