Include All Routinely Slaughtered Animals in the Humane Methods of Slaughter Act of 1958
The Issue
Did you know that if a chicken or turkey is ineffectively stunned and misses the blade at a slaughter house, it is then boiled alive and must be discarded because the inhumane method of slaughter renders its meat useless? Almost 1 million chickens and turkeys are killed this way each year in U.S. slaughterhouses due to the inhumane methods and speed at which they are slaughtered. Now the USDA is finalizing a proposal which would increase the speed at which their lines kill the fowl, increasing the percentage of birds that suffer through such inhumane slaughter methods.
Please sign this petition to include poultry in the Humane Methods of Slaughter Act. Not only could it prevent much of the suffering caused by current slaughterhouse regulations, it could make an impact on how the White House will treat the USDA proposal to increase production speeds by about 25%.
Inhumane slaughter doesn't only happen to poultry. There are other animals also not included under the Humane Methods of Slaughter Act that are routinely killed for food. Isn't it about time we show compassion to all? A strong society grows with compassion.
For us, the wonderful United States of America, compassion began in 1958 with the approval of the Humane Methods of Slaughter Act, 6 years before the American Civil Rights Act. Nearly 60 years and much growth later, we still only recognize the same, small group of animals as worthy of the right to humane slaughter. It is time we reflect the growth, compassion, and enlightenment of our society, and include all animals under the Humane Methods of Slaughter Act.
