Stop funding land grabs in Kenya

The Issue

The Maasai have variously and severally continued to suffer from forced evictions from their ancestral lands since the advent of colonialism in the 1900. Ever since the Maasai have lost land to create room for colonial settlers and post colonial government projects and politically correct individuals in government. The Maasai community from Narasha are now faced with a third eviction to create room for the expansion of Geothermal Power Generating Plants. In the last 30 years the Maasai have lost land to facilitate the creation of flower farms, a National park and power generation without due consideration for compensation, restitution or even alternative settlements. The first eviction affected 4000 people which the current eviction threatens the lives of over 3500 people including 1000 children from 2 community primary schools, 2 churches and an Indigenous Maasai Cultural project. The World Bank is funding the dispossession, displacement and subsequent evictions of the Maasai in the name of funding development projects. We in Maa Civil Society Forum urge the World Bank to stop funding such land grabs in Kenya. The evictions are a violation of the rights of the Maasai community by forces of impunity and goes against the spirit of international law and safeguard for the protection of indigenous peoples rights. It also contradicts the principles as outlined by the constitution of Kenya as well as well as the United Nation Declaration o the Rights of Indigenous People, and in essence, the violation of the principle of FPIC (Free, Prior and Informed Consent) stipulates the absence of the benefit sharing concepts that particularly would safeguard both the interest of the government, communities and multinational companies.
