Speed reduction campaign for Evesham Road, Norton

Speed reduction campaign for Evesham Road, Norton
The Issue
Following a series of motor vehicle accidents, the latest involving a fatality, we are campaigning to reduce the speed limit on the B4088 Evesham Road between to the north of its junction with the A44 roundabout and Norton village.
This section of road is the 60mph national speed limit. However, the roads north of the village of Norton, heading towards Alcester -- and those continuing to Studley and Redditch, as well as the A44 to Pershore -- are all 40 or 50mph limits.
The recent accident record, and that speed anomoly, suggest the need to monitor and address:
⦁ The quantity of traffic
⦁ The type of vehicles using the road
⦁ The speed at which they're travelling, and
⦁ Whether, the current speed limit is appropriate for the expanding villages of Norton, Harvington, Abbots Salford and Salford Priors as a through-route to Evesham, The Valley shopping complex and Norton's local convenience store, Asda.
There are 24 properties on the stretch of road concerned. That is considerably larger than the 3-9 homes that constitiute a hamlet, which are usually served by a 30mph limit.
The full planning consent given for a development of 10 lodges opposite Firefly Fields will raise this total to 34. They will be used as dwellings for up to 11 months of the year.
The road is heavily used by commuter and leisure traffic heading to and from Evesham (including the train station), agricultural vehicles going about their daily work, cyclists, equestrians, and visitors using Bredon-Vale Caravan and Camping.
In addition, it's a wildlife corridor. The scene of the recent fatal accident is just yards from a sign warning road-users that deer use that as a crossing point. One of the recent accidents, which involved a vehicle leaving the road, was caused by a deer being on the road.
The Valley attracts a lot of locals who walk from Norton, along with guests staying at Bredon-Vale Caravan and Camping.
Lowering the speed limit to 40mph would enhance the safety of those residents, guests, equestrians, workers, drivers, riders and pedestrians who find this stretch of road increasingly unsafe.
Through initiatives like the second cycling and walking investment strategy (CWIS2), the Government aims to increase the number of people choosing to use cycling and walking as a natural alternative to vehicles for shorter journeys.
By signing this petition, you'll help us to move our campaign forward to lower the speed limit and lower the risk of any further serious injury or fatality. Any of us could be involved, next time. Thank you.
