Reinstate honors programs in CCUSD

Reinstate honors programs in CCUSD
The Issue
February 25, 2025
To the President of the Culver City School Board, Triston Ezidore:
cc: Board Members, Brian Guererro, Stephanie Loredo, Andrew Lachman, Lindsay Carlson
We, the members of the Culver City community, are writing to request that the issue of restoring honors classes at the high school and middle school be agendized for discussion.
It is time to reinstate English Honors classes in the high school as well as the honors program in middle school. It is important to remember that these classes are open access, meaning any student who wants to enroll can do so. Three years have passed since these courses were eliminated and the following has been noted:
- Both quantitative data and qualitative feedback now reveal a troubling decline in academic rigor, student learning, and the diversity within AP classes.
- Since the removal of English Honors, many students have expressed dissatisfaction with the diminished level of engagement and challenge in their coursework.
- CCUSD stands alone among most other districts, including LAUSD, which do offer honors classes and programs in middle school and high school. The absence of these programs makes our district less attractive to some families.
- Courses such as English Honors classes are far more than advanced electives; they are a vital component of our educational framework, nurturing critical thinking, and advanced analytical skills. Honors courses provide essential preparation for the challenges of AP classes.
- In addition, this elimination puts our students at a disadvantage relative to students at other schools that continue to provide multiple opportunities for advanced study in 9th and 10th grade and start advanced work earlier at the middle school. This lack of opportunity will negatively affect college applications.
- As a community, we are calling on the school Board to act immediately to reinstate all honors classes.
Together, we can ensure that our schools provide the quality education our students deserve.
Please donate to Save CCUSD. The funds are used for flyers, mailers, posters, lawn signs and our booth at the fiesta.
