Re-instate Urbana High School's Dance Classes and Dance Team
The Issue
We, the undersigned students, parents, faculty, and community members of Urbana High School, respectfully submit this petition urging the immediate reinstatement of the school's dance programs to include the dance classes and the dance team. The dance program at Urbana High School is reliant on one dance teacher who was let go due to budget cuts within FCPS.
We believe that the dance program is an integral component of our school's offerings, contributing significantly to the well-being and growth of our students. The Urbana High School dance program fosters creativity, discipline, physical fitness, teamwork, and cultural appreciation among its participants. It is the only activity where the Learning for Life students can physically express themselves alongside the mainstream students. Through dance, students have not only found a medium for self-expression but have also developed invaluable skills such as confidence, coordination, and resilience.
We firmly believe that reinstating the dance program is not just desirable but imperative for the following reasons:
Academic and Personal Development: Dance education has been shown to enhance academic performance by promoting cognitive skills such as concentration, memory, and problem-solving. Moreover, it provides students with a creative outlet to express themselves and explore their identity, thus contributing to their overall well-being and personal development.
Physical Health and Fitness: In an era where sedentary lifestyles and obesity rates among youth are on the rise, the dance program plays a crucial role in promoting physical activity and healthy habits among students. By engaging in regular dance practice and performances, students develop endurance, flexibility, strength, and cardiovascular fitness.
Cultural Enrichment and Diversity: Dance is a universal language that transcends barriers of culture, ethnicity, and socioeconomic background. The dance program at Urbana High School exposes students to a diverse range of dance styles and traditions from around the world, fostering cultural appreciation, tolerance, and global awareness.
Competitive Advantage and College Preparedness: Participation in the dance program not only enriches students' high school experience but also enhances their college and career prospects. Many colleges and universities value extracurricular involvement, especially in the arts, as evidence of a well-rounded applicant. By reinstating the dance program, Urbana High School can give its students a competitive edge in the college admissions process.
In light of the compelling reasons outlined above, we respectfully urge you to reconsider the decision to discontinue the dance program at Urbana High School and take immediate steps to reinstate it. We are confident that with the support of the administration, faculty, parents, and community members, we can work together to ensure the continued success and vitality of the dance program for generations to come.
Thank you for your attention to this matter, and we look forward to a positive resolution that prioritizes the best interests of our students and school community.
