PROTECT OUR RIVER!

The Issue

Countless citizens of Page County oppose allowing a large-scale Luray RV Resort and Campground on Rte. 211 West to discharge 50,000 gallons per day of partially treated wastewater into our already compromised Shenandoah River.  A billion-dollar, national real estate development firm called Blue Water is behind this project.

The Board of Supervisors granted Blue Water a Special Use Permit for the project, and the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) has proposed a draft permit to allow the discharges.

But it's not too late: wanting to be a "good neighbor", Blue Water may be willing to consider improvements.  DEQ may consider further citizen input, and we can urge the Board of Supervisors to think twice about other comparable developments in the future.

If you support ANY of the following steps, please sign this petition:

Ask Blue Water to:

  • reduce the amount of pollutants by upgrading its wastewater treatment plant beyond minimum requirements
  • install riparian buffers to absorb pollutants
  • place its treatment plant well above the 100 year flood plain
  • protect drinking water by not using sewage drain fields
  • support frequent water quality testing with effective technology and reporting to the public.  That will help protect public health and safety for swimming, fishing, and boating.

Ask the DEQ to include additional conditions in any final permit it issues.

Ask the Board of Supervisors to consider limits on the size and scale of future developments and other conditions to preserve the County's rural character.

If you want to help protect our river and our drinking water, please sign here.
