Prioritise the safety of cyclists and pedestrians on Bristol’s roads

Prioritise the safety of cyclists and pedestrians on Bristol’s roads
The Issue
In the second week of January 2026, I found myself in a situation no one should ever experience. I was directly involved in the resuscitation of a cyclist who had been fatally hit by a car on North Street, Bedminster. Despite all efforts from multiple members of the public and emergency services, the cyclist tragically died on scene. This heartbreaking incident highlighted the pressing need for a change in how Bristol manages road safety for cyclists and pedestrians.
Recent statistics show that in urban areas across the UK, 82% of cyclist casualties occur on busy urban streets, similar to North Street. Additionally, pedestrians, especially children and older adults, are at a significant disadvantage in heavily trafficked areas. By reducing through-traffic, managing the speed of these vehicles and prioritising non-motorised road users, we can transform Bristol into a city proud to achieve safe and sustainable urban transport.
I support the South Bristol Neighbourhood Scheme, which plans to implement changes to South Bristol’s roads between 2026 and 2027. The scheme aims to improve the local environment by reducing through-traffic, encouraging more active transport and enhance public spaces thereby fostering safer neighbourhoods for everyone. However, the current proposals do not include any speed-calming measures on North Street and with the closure of other local through-roads, this is likely to result in increased vehicular traffic along North Street.
Collaborating closely with city planners and traffic management authorities, I propose actionable steps including:
1. Establishment of dedicated cycle lanes physically separated from vehicular traffic.
2. Installation of advanced road crossings equipped with safety features for pedestrians, particularly near residential areas.
3. Imposing speed-calming measures in areas with high pedestrian and cyclist activity.
My goal is not only to prevent further tragedies but also to promote healthier and more environmentally friendly modes of transportation. Implementing measures such as improved bicycle lanes, better signage, and traffic calming methods can significantly reduce the risk to vulnerable road users.
With your support, we can help make Bristol’s roads safer for everyone, ensuring that every cyclist or pedestrian going about their day returns to their home safely.
Please support this petition to bring about meaningful change for the safety of all.
