On September 11, 2022, on route 347 and Terryville Rd. Port Jefferson Station, Hanahn Benitez and her unborn child were hit and killed by driver who said he saw nothing but could not prove what he was doing when he hit them. He did not even get a ticket. The current laws allowed him to walk away without any further explanation or investigation. Stricter laws for DWD (Driving While Distracted) will help to ensure that distracted drivers do not go unpunished, especially when it results in a serious injury or fatality.
