'My name is Amaal Finn. I don't know where to start except to say I am an Australian citizen, as is my four year old daughter and we are currently stuck in Egypt, unable to return home due to my husband Mazen Hassan Baioumy. I came to Egypt on a family holiday late last year with my then three and a half year old daughter. My husband prevented me from bringing her back to Australia when he and I returned to Melbourne. After trying and failing to convince him to let me bring her back to Melbourne, I returned to Egypt in August this year without my husbands knowledge. I was accompanied by my father. My husband, originally from Egypt now lives in Melbourne and is a permanent resident of Australia, and in the process of applying for citizenship. He has illegally placed travel bans on my daughter and myself, preventing us from leaving Egypt, even though he is living in Melbourne himself. Amaal Finn and her daughter Zareen have been trapped in Egypt since mid August 2013. The purpose of this petition is to help free her by creating awareness of this terrible situation and what we can do to help her.
Amaal and Zareen have suffered violence and threats of further harm from Mazen Baioumy's family in Egypt. Amaal and her father travelled to Egypt in August to regain custody of Zareen (custody since granted to Amaal by both Australian and Egyptian courts), but the family refused. Amaal attempted to flee with Zareen, but was caught by one of Baioumy's brothers. He pinned her to the ground with his knee and attempted to strangle her. Baioumy's other brother attacked Amaal's father, hitting him and gouging his eyes. Fortunately, the police arrived and intervened before further harm could occur.
Since then, there have been multiple death threats against Amaal, violence against people helping Amaal, and an attempted kidnapping by a member of the Baioumy family and hired thugs. On top of this, the current unrest in Egypt makes the country a dangerous place for anybody. At one point shortly after Amaal left the Egyptian Public Offices a bomb was diffused in that area.
Amaal is in constant fear for her and Zareen's safety. This is not a safe place for them and they have to get out.
Her husband, Mazen Hassan Baioumy, has been ordered by the Family Court of Australia to lift the travel bans on Amaal and Zareen.
He has not taken the necessary steps to lift the bans.
On 4 October 2013, an arrest warrant against Mr Baioumy issued by theFamily Court of Australia which has not been executed as he cannot be located. To assist in locating Mr Baioumy, the Court made orders on 18 October 2013 permitting specific details of this case to be published.
