Give hard-working employees the full day off on Thanksgiving. Close your stores.

Give hard-working employees the full day off on Thanksgiving. Close your stores.

The Issue

I’ve been working in the retail industry since I was 18 years old. As a store manager in a local mall, I recently received notice that I have to work on Thanksgiving because Macy’s is opening. Retail employees like myself work crazy hours as it is. And now, we’re being asked to sacrifice rare family time to work on a holiday. When is enough enough?

When I was growing up, Macy’s was the definition of Thanksgiving. Its brand has always been associated with the holiday. Just think about the big parade. Their holiday slogan is “Believe.” But today, their actions show that they could really care less about family time. They just want to make another buck from hard-working people like me and you around Thanksgiving.

It’s time that Macy’s lead by example, stay true to its core values and close on Thanksgiving. Tell them to stop taking our family day away.

Often times, Macy’s is the anchor in a shopping mall. So when its stores open, all the smaller mall stores like mine have to follow suit. On Thanksgiving, employees’ friends and families are left to adjust plans, tighten schedules and change travel plans just so Macy’s make more money. Fortunately, several big retailers like DSW, Nordstrom and Costco have recently decided to do the right thing and close on Thanksgiving. And those companies are gaining fans because of their decisions. So the momentum is building in our favor.

Now it’s Macy’s turn. Tell them you’ve had enough. Tell Macy’s that we “Believe” in family and we thought they did too. I won’t shop at Macy’s until the company changes this policy, and I hope you will do the same. Please sign this petition to tell Macy’s to close business on Thanksgiving -- if not this year, then certainly next year.
