The romantic pairing of the characters: Rey and Kylo Ren in the upcoming Star Wars movies
The Issue
The Star Wars characters, Rey and Kylo Ren, may not seem like the ideal couple at first, but the two actually have more in common than meets the eye and their romantic pairing would not only be beneficial to them, but to the plot as a whole. A significant plot twist would result from their new and unique relationship and several sparks could fly when the protagonist and the antagonist form such a connection in the midst of a war-leaving the film more attractive than it already is.
There are several other reasons as to why they should form a closer bond:
1. Balance could be achieved in the Force:
Rey and Kylo Ren could share a Yin/Yang relationship. Star Wars is not just a franchise about Good vs. Evil, but both the Light side and Dark. There cannot be one without the other. The two opposing sides of the Force have been at war with each other since Episode 1, but if Rey and Kylo Ren were to form a relationship, the two can both fuse characteristics from each side and achieve a balance. Just how Darth Vader did so by saving Luke.
2. Rey could help Kylo Ren leave the Dark side and return to the Light:
We already know that Kylo Ren has a constant internal struggle within himself to return to the Light, and now that Hans Solo is gone, Rey can be the very one to give him the last push towards it. She can be the one to help him truly realize that he does not have to lie in darkness and feel such pain within himself for the rest of life because he has a brighter future with the Light; with his family.
3.Their personal characteristics compliment each other:
Opposites do attract, and that is clear with these two characters. Rey and Kylo Ren share the classic “Beauty and Beast” chemistry: their distinct characteristics and personality traits compliment each other, making them an ideal couple. Serving as a perfect balance of the Force while also proving to be a strong and vigorous combination, they could face any variety of foe or obstacles if they simply worked together, and thus being able to vanquish the First Order and restore peace in the galaxy.
4. They both share a Force Bond:
In the Interrogation scene shared by the two in The Force Awakens, Kylo Ren treats Rey in a very unusual way. Not only does he refrain from using extensive violence to force information out of her like he did with Poe, but he also delved into her mind-analyzing her most sensitive emotions and thoughts. (Not to mention that his interrogation with Rey, he acts with a much more gentle and casual disposition, refraining from making Rey any more uncomfortable than she already is.) Even beforehand, he used the phrase ‘I feel it too’- as if relating to her deepest yearnings. Again, he did not do this with Poe, he only used excessive violence. This technique is known as Force Bonding, and is commonly used by Sith members among Jedis; sound familiar? He connected with her, and later in the scene, she did the same with him-using the same method to exposes his darkest fear: not living up to the standards of Darth Vader. In this way the Force entwined them with each other-linking their thoughts and emotions as one.
5. They both share the feeling of isolation and fear:
Rey and Kylo Ren both find themselves desperate for a place to belong and it is this that they can relate to each other. Kylo Ren realizes the connection he shares with Rey and sympathizes with her when he reads the emotions deep within her mind (once again going back to his phrase: ‘I feel it too.’). Even after he fails to retrieve information from her, he begs Snoke to continue let him interrogate her, claiming she is still of use. Even the novelization of The Force Awakens acknowledges the fact that Kylo Ren had compassion for her (possibly because he can very well relate to her)-a trait the past Anakin referred to as a Jedi's form of love when saying “Compassion, which I would define as unconditional love, is essential to a Jedi’s life. So you might say, that we are encouraged to love.”
Here are also just some of the plot outcomes that could result from the pairing:
- Kylo Ren could join the Resistance cause and become a valuable member
- Rey could join the Dark side
- The two main antagonists in the Trilogy could now be Supreme Leader Snoke and General Hux if Kylo Ren left the First Order
- Rey and Kylo Ren could form a powerful duo
- There could be a love triangle between Rey, Kylo Ren, and Finn
- Rey could serve as a ‘Grey’ character-being a balance between the Dark and Light sides of the Force (also making it easier for her to relate to Kylo’s complex struggle, vice versa)
- Rey and Kylo Ren could still remain fighting on separate sides of the battle but still share a unique connection/relationship in the midst of it
- There could be a new generation in the Solo/Skywalker family if Rey were to bear Kylo’s son/daughter
If we can reach up to 10,000 signatures, I will be sending copies of this and a formal letter to LucasFilms and other Star Wars associates for reviewal, including: Kathleen Kennedy, George Lucas, J.J. Abrams, Rian Johnson, Lawrence Kasdan, Michael Arndt
