The Issue

We wouldn’t accept actors blacking up, so why applaud ‘cripping up’?

Hollywood, mainstream media and social media's focus in terms of equality is solely centered around racial and gender issues. Producers are actively implementing racially diverse roles into movies, which obviously is a great thing.

JJ Abrams said this about the conception of the upcoming Star Wars Movie: "We wrote these characters but when we went to cast it, one of the things I had felt, having been to the Emmys a couple times — you look around that room and you see the whitest fucking room in the history of time. Its just unbelievably white. And I just thought, we’re casting this show and we have an opportunity to do anything we want, why not cast the show with actors of color?"

This development is great, but it leaves out a vast amount of individuals: disabled actors.

Instead of "cripping up" we should give more talented disabled actors the chance of being part of our movie and entertainment culture.

Who's to say that James Bond can not be played by an actor or actress with down syndrome, or high-functioning autism.

Mr. Abrams, tear down this wall of social injustice in the media industry and cast disabled actors for your upcoming movies.
