The Issue

My name is Jeannie Ellis. 24 years ago, my youngest brother, Terry Rewis was tragically murdered in Swainsboro, Georgia. His case, I believe, was mishandled from the start. A box full of potential evidence remains untested even today, seemingly forgotten. Contradictions in witness statements regarding the time of Terry's death have also remained unexplored. Terry’s case is just one of many unsolved cases in Georgia, where the search for truth and justice appears to be an uphill battle.

This is not just about Terry, but about numerous other unsolved cases in Georgia. Today, I stand for all those affected, desperate for the spotlight to shine on these forgotten cases. It is a simple but important step that the local news stations and Sheriff's departments can take - to highlight at least five of these unsolved cases once a week. In addition, local government officials could acknowledge these cases during community events, while churches could be encouraged to add them to their prayer lists.

According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, as of 2020, there were over 1900 unsolved homicides dating back to 1980 (Source: Atlanta Journal-Constitution). This staggering number only reemphasizes the urgency for this petition. Equally important, this is not just a plea for justice, but a statement from us, the public: we will serve and protect each other - just as says the motto of our police force.

Together, let us demand that Georgia puts a greater emphasis on its unsolved missing and murders cases. For Terry, for all the lost and forgotten, sign this petition and make the authorities remind each other - every life matters.
