Take initiative to prevent sexual assault

The Issue

On 16th October 2015, the Tab Manchester revealed information from the Greater Manchester Police that there had already been 73 sexual attacks reported in Manchester this year.

Sadly, since October we've only seen these numbers escalate to terrifying heights and not enough is being done to prevent them rising further.

The Tab Manchester's survey in October revealed that a shocking 44 per cent of girls in Manchester had been sexually assaulted and 18 per cent claimed to have been raped.

In 2014, there were 27 reported rapes, but before 2015 has even finished, this number has been exceeded and it's not good enough.

Since the horrific spate of attacks this time last year, Manchester students admittedly have not felt safe, and have been pressuring the Police to spend more time patrolling the streets and dealing with personal safety, rather than victim blaming and focusing on shutting down house parties.

The narrative is beginning to change, with more victims coming forward about attacks, but the numbers we are seeing still refer only to those reported assaults.

This petition has been launched to encompass the fear and solidarity of Manchester students towards the mistreatment of victims by the Greater Manchester Police.

Police statements call out to Fallowfield residents to 'take precautions to try and protect themselves from similar incidents in the future'. This isn't good enough. We don't feel safe.

We need the Police to take initiative towards crime prevention and put more officers and PCSOs on the streets.

There may be cuts to their services, but we can work together to make Fallowfield a safer place with more deterrent Police patrols until at least 4am.

We will pull together and create a safer way of getting home from the bus stop after a night out, whether it be coordinated groups to meet at specific times or just a larger Police presence in the known areas of perpetration, such as Ladybarn Lane.
