Fight the Freight Yard

Fight the Freight Yard

The Issue

The Smithtown Town Board is supporting a private regional freight yard with five tracks, two huge buildings, and a 161-freight car capacity off Meadow Glen Road at Pulaski Road in Kings Park. The freight yard would be required to receive/transport hazardous materials. The yard would be a chain link fence away from homes in Kings Park, with countless freight cars traveling alongside homes, schools, playgrounds, businesses and residential roads in Greenlawn, Commack, Fort Salonga, Northport, East Northport, Huntington, and all towns along the Port Jefferson line of the LIRR.

Freight yard pollution poses health risks, especially to children. This freight yard would be located directly over a Deep Flow Recharge area; thus, any spill or leak will seep into Long Island’s aquifer, harming our drinking supply. Alarmingly, the risk of train derailments grows every year in the United States. Freight cars will leave filled and return filled, being trucked into and out of the yard by the owner’s existing 50+ fleet of diesel tractor trailers. This will lead to an enormous increase of diesel trucks on our already overburdened local roads, from Smithtown to Greenlawn and beyond. There will be increased noise, lights, vibrations, and added pollution all along the Port Jefferson line.

We oppose this freight yard and request Supervisor Wehrheim and the Smithtown Town Board members immediately pull their support of this freight yard and work with the community to stop this dangerous and unnecessary proposal.
