The Issue

Gender-based violence and femicide in South Africa have reached a point where women and girls cannot continue living in fear. We are calling for urgent, measurable action to prevent rape, assault, disappearance and the killing of women, strengthen investigations and prosecutions, improve protection for survivors, and hold institutions accountable when they fail to protect people.

Women are not statistics. We are mothers, daughters, sisters, friends and human beings. We deserve to live safely and return home to our families.

We are coming together peacefully to demand action, accountability and meaningful change.

WE ARE DONE BEING SILENT.

South Africa, HOW MANY MORE WOMEN HAVE TO DIE?

How many mothers must bury their daughters?
How many children must grow up without their mothers?
How many women must survive rape, abuse and violence before our country says: ENOUGH?

Women are being murdered. Women are being raped. Women are disappearing. Families are being left shattered.

And every time another woman dies, we hear the same words:

“Thoughts and prayers.”
“Another investigation.”
“Another statement.”
“Another promise.”

WE NEED ACTION.

We are not statistics.

We are not headlines.

We are not disposable.

We are someone’s daughter.
Someone’s mother.
Someone’s sister.
Someone’s best friend.
Someone’s entire world.

And WE ARE HUMAN BEINGS WHO DESERVE TO LIVE.

We refuse to accept a country where women have to constantly calculate whether it is safe to walk home, take public transport, go to work, leave an abusive relationship or simply exist in public.

We refuse to accept that fear should be a normal part of being a woman.

WE ARE CALLING FOR URGENT ACTION.

We demand properly resourced GBV investigations.

We demand effective protection for women who report abuse and for survivors who need help.

We demand serious action when protection orders are violated.

We demand properly functioning investigations and prosecutions so that cases do not simply disappear into a system that families cannot understand.

We demand safer public spaces, transport routes and communities.

We demand properly funded shelters and survivor services.

We demand transparency about what is happening to GBV cases.

We demand accountability when institutions fail women.

And we demand that survivors, families and women’s organisations are listened to when decisions about our safety are being made.

THIS IS NOT ABOUT PARTY POLITICS.

This is about human lives.

This is about our mothers.

Our daughters.

Our sisters.

Our friends.

Our neighbours.

Our colleagues.

And ourselves.

We are not calling for hatred.

We are not calling for vigilantism.

We are calling for JUSTICE, PROTECTION, ACCOUNTABILITY AND ACTION.

We are asking every woman and every person who believes women deserve to live:

STAND WITH US.

Sign this petition.

Share it.

Bring another woman.

Bring your family.

Bring your community.

Take this conversation out of our phones and into our communities, workplaces, streets and institutions.

Because one woman speaking can be dismissed.

But thousands of women standing together cannot be ignored.

WE HAVE BEEN QUIET LONG ENOUGH.

WE HAVE BEEN AFRAID LONG ENOUGH.

WE HAVE LOST ENOUGH.

SOUTH AFRICA — HEAR US.

WE ARE NOT STATISTICS.

WE ARE HUMAN.

WE DESERVE TO LIVE.
