The issue

Protect the world's smallest and rarest dolpin by banning commercial fishing in their entire range. We can't afford to lose even a single individual!!

Even the International Whaling Commission's scientific committee recommends: "full closures of any fisheries within the range of Maui’s dolphins that are known to pose a risk of bycatch of small cetaceans (i.e. set net and trawl fisheries)."

2 July 2014: From a Facebook post by Green MP Gareth Hughes: "I asked another question in Parliament today about the Maui's dolphins and was staggered Nick Smith would call NZ's Maui's dolphin expert, Dr Liz Slooten a green extremist! Here is an internationally recognized scientific expert who has studied these dolphins for decades with the backing of thousands of other scientists and prestigious organizations on one side and Nick Smith on the other who thinks all the scientists are wrong! I know who I trust."
