Changing the Mental Health Conversation: Embrace Alternative Therapies!

The Issue

When I had a second MRI scan relating to the MS episode I experienced in November 2017 the consultant instantly told me I would now need to go on medication which include antidepressants.

This was not a recommendation but a statement of fact.

Without even having a conversation about how I had managed the condition from 2007 when I had the first MS episode, the NHS immediately decided the solution would now be medicine.

I walked out without medication and have kept using Laughter Therapy as my practice for reducing stress and avoid relapses since then.

My frustration stems from the fact that there are no questions being asked only a prescription being handed.

It is time for a change within our healthcare system!

Overprescribing antidepressants as a one-size-fits-all solution for mental health issues is not effective nor sustainable.

We need to prioritise alternative therapies that have proven benefits and can provide individuals with more options to manage their mental health.

According to a study published in The Lancet Psychiatry journal (2018), over 70 million prescriptions for antidepressants were issued in England alone.

This alarming statistic highlights an overreliance on medication rather than exploring alternative practices that could potentially offer long-term benefits with fewer side effects.

Alternative therapies focus on holistic approaches that address underlying causes of mental health issues rather than simply masking symptoms with pharmaceuticals.

There are many alternative therapies that can be effective in treating mental health problems and have shown promising results in improving mental wellbeing.

Some of these alternative therapies are,

·  Laughter therapy: Laughter has been shown to reduce stress, anxiety, and depression.

·  Mindfulness: Mindfulness is a type of meditation that can help people to focus on the present moment and to reduce stress.

·  Art therapy: Art therapy can help people to express their emotions and to heal from trauma.

·  Music therapy: Music therapy can help people to relax and to improve their mood.

·  Pet therapy: Pet therapy can help people to reduce stress and to feel more connected to others.

By incorporating these alternative practices into our National Health Service (NHS), we can provide patients with more comprehensive treatment options tailored to their unique needs.

This approach would not only empower individuals but also alleviate the burden on our healthcare system by reducing the reliance on medication and its associated costs.

It is crucial to acknowledge that medication can be beneficial for some individuals, but it should not be the sole solution offered by the NHS.

We must prioritise a diverse range of therapies that consider each person's individual circumstances, preferences, and cultural backgrounds.

We are calling on the government to introduce alternative therapies to mental health patients in the UK within a funded and solid scheme working in conjunction with the NHS and NHS-related charities.

This would make a real difference to the lives of millions of people who are struggling with mental health problems.

Join us in urging the NHS to expand its mental health options and embrace alternative therapies.

Let us advocate for a more holistic approach that recognises the value of these practices in promoting mental wellbeing.

Together, we can ensure that individuals receive comprehensive care and have access to a wide array of treatment options beyond overprescribed antidepressants.

Vulnerable Strength is a non-profit project that helps people who are being overprescribed antidepressant medication.

We believe that everyone deserves access to effective treatment for mental health problems, and we believe that alternative therapies should be a part of the solution.

Sign this petition today and let's make a positive change in how mental health is approached within our healthcare system.

Together, we can create a brighter future for everyone seeking support and healing!
