Ban Unsupervised Deep River Swimming in Wiltshire

Ban Unsupervised Deep River Swimming in Wiltshire
The Issue
In my role as an emergency care assistant, I have been firsthand witness to the heart-wrenching consequences of unsupervised deep river swimming. A recent tragedy in one of our local towns saw a life lost, where no emergency life-saving equipment was available nearby. This is not an isolated incident — in just the past three weeks, three people have died in our rivers, and these fatalities continue to rise.
Wiltshire, with its beautiful rivers and serene landscapes, is a beloved spot for both locals and visitors. However, these natural wonders can quickly turn deadly without the presence of lifeguards, particularly in areas where the water is over one metre deep. Such depths can be perilous, often hiding strong currents and unexpected drop-offs that a casual swimmer might not anticipate.
The distressing fact is that the presence of lifeguards could have potentially saved these lives by providing immediate assistance and alerting emergency services. Communities around the world enforce such regulations, and it's time for Wiltshire to adopt similar measures to protect its residents and visitors.
We are calling on local authorities in Wiltshire to institute a ban on unsupervised swimming in rivers where the water depth exceeds one metre. This policy would mandate the presence of trained lifeguards who can react swiftly in emergencies, drastically reducing the risk of fatalities.
We must prioritize the safety of our community and prevent future tragedies that not only claim lives but devastate families. Although this may require an initial investment in training and staffing, the potential to save lives is invaluable.
Support this petition to urge the Wiltshire Council to introduce this essential safety regulation, ensuring our rivers can be enjoyed safely by everyone. Sign this petition and be a part of the movement to protect our community from unnecessary danger and heartache. Together, we can make a change that preserves life and maintains the cherished beauty of our local rivers. Please, add your signature to make our local rivers safe for all.
