Ban Whaling in the Faroe Islands #NoSeaThisRed
The Issue
- This is important because the species of whales that are being hunted are going to be driven to extinction. Man has changed its ways with the hunting of sperm, humpback and other Whale species and now they are not desperately threatened, it is time to stop this dreadful killing and ensure we protect more Whale species.
- Approximately 950 Long-finned Pilot Whales are killed each year in the Faroe Islands. The killing of these animals is done mostly during the Summer as a community event called a 'Grindagrap'.
- The animals are killed brutally. They are first circled by many different boats which then stones attached to lines are thrown into the water which forces the whales into the shallows where they beach themselves. Whales that do not entirely beach themselves have blunt hook called a Gaff inserted into their blow hole where they are then dragged ashore. Finally when the whales are ashore, they are killed with a whaling knife that cuts through their dorsal area through to the spinal cord. It takes on average 30 seconds for the animal to die however it can takes minutes.
- The amount of whales being killed in the Faroe Islands has significantly decreased from back in the 1950s where there were 18,772 Pilot Whale deaths due to this activity. In 2011 there were 726 deaths recorded, which although is a great improvement it is still an incredibly large amount of whales being slaughtered.
- If people outside show, by combining their disagreements on this issue, that the Faroe Islands should stop this barbaric activity it may just be enough to push the rights of the animal to the top rather than what the Faroese people want to do because of tradition. What will happen when there are no more Pilot whales to kill? Will they choose another speices for their Grindagrap?
