Save our Borth Zoo

The Issue

Borth zoo is set in the area near Aberystwyth, Ceredigion.  It is an amazing outside attraction for children and adults and not expensive either.  As well as the zoo itself they also offer educational talks to explain about their animals.

They have taken on many pets that for one reason or another, people have had to rehome.  This has also given them a diverse collection to offer for the publics viewing.  They allow the opportunity for small children especially to get close and personal with the animals, with the inclusion of a petting barn.

They are in the process of improving the zoo and despite being closed due to covid-19 and lack of funds their animal care has not been compromised.  They feed the animals the best vegetables, fruit and meats.  The vegetables and fruit are of human quality (or even better in many cases) and none of the animals have gone without.

The keepers work hard to ensure that everyday the animals are checked, cleaned where necessary, fed and watered. As well as ensuring that their enrichment is changed around to stop the animals becoming bored.  They spend time talking and interacting with the animals as well.

Recently due to financial problems and because of the animal care being put first every time, the owners have found themselves struggling.  But such is the local and not-so local support from many people,  they have received many donations of food and enrichment items.

So why, you must be asking yourself by now - are we raising a petition?

Unfortunately Ceredigion council seem to want this zoo to close down and have even said that the animals could be euthanised or rehomed.  Actually rehoming is so difficult to do, so in reality if this zoo closed, most of the animals would be euthanised.  Such a waste.

Already, the council have made the zoo get rid of its category 1 animals such as the Lions which were recently rehomed successfully to Port Lymph Zoo in Kent (this took over a year to sort out and organise).  It is not easy to rehome zoo animals.  No zoos have empty enclosures just waiting for new animals and if they want a particular animal they will have already sourced it.

So we want to petition Ceredigion Council to think again and start supporting the zoo.

If we lose this zoo, we will be losing a tourist attraction, losing a community attraction, putting people out of work, and maybe compromising the local industry of caravan parks and second homes.  The zoo generates an income for other businesses as people come to the zoo.

But worse than all this the animals welfare will be compromised....Please help us save these animals and the amazing people that run it....
