Recognize and Protect Transgender and Gender-Diverse Individuals

For your consideration...

We, the undersigned, believe that all individuals deserve to be treated with dignity and respect, regardless of their gender identity. Current legal and societal frameworks often operate on a binary understanding of gender, now recognizing only male and female. This limited view excludes and marginalizes transgender and gender-diverse individuals, whose lived experiences fall outside of this binary.

Science, medical professionals, and leading human rights organizations recognize that gender is a spectrum. Transgender people, whose gender identity differs from the sex they were assigned at birth, deserve recognition and protection. Gender-diverse individuals, who may identify as neither male nor female, or as a combination of both, also deserve recognition and protection.

This petition calls for the following:

 * Legal Recognition: Laws and policies should be updated to explicitly include gender identity as a protected category, ensuring transgender and gender-diverse individuals have equal rights in areas such as employment, housing, healthcare, education, and public accommodations.

 * End Discrimination: Discrimination based on gender identity must be prohibited. This includes discriminatory practices in employment, housing, healthcare, education, and access to services.

 * Inclusive Language: Official forms, documents, and public discourse should move beyond the male/female binary to include options for non-binary and gender-diverse individuals. Respectful and inclusive language should be used in all settings.

 * Access to Healthcare: Transgender and gender-diverse individuals should have access to appropriate and affirming healthcare, including gender-affirming care.

 * Education and Awareness: Public education campaigns are needed to raise awareness and understanding of gender identity and to combat prejudice and discrimination against transgender and gender-diverse individuals.

I am creating this petition as an ally. While I am not transgender myself, I see the profound effects of the national exclusion of their identity and right to be recognized. We cannot allow anyone to be erased or forgotten simply because their lived experience differs from the majority. The idea that one person with a pen can dictate the very existence of others is unacceptable. If you say you value human life and happiness, it demands that we all speak out, even when these issues don't directly impact us, just as they don't me. Silence is not an option.

You have a choice here – a "choice" that transgender individuals were never afforded. That "choice" was made for them in their biology and DNA. They deserve the very best of human dignity and human rights.

Furthermore, a recent executive order defining gender solely as male or female belies the reality of the diverse spectrum of gender identities that exist within our society. Regardless of political affiliation, this is not an issue that should be politicized. Recognizing and protecting the rights of transgender and gender-diverse individuals is a matter of basic human dignity and respect. It is about acknowledging the lived experiences of our fellow citizens and ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to live authentically and without fear of discrimination. This is not a partisan issue; it is a human issue.

We urge lawmakers, policymakers, and community leaders to acknowledge the existence and validity of transgender and gender-diverse identities. We call for the implementation of policies and practices that protect the rights and well-being of all individuals, regardless of their gender identity. Please make the right choice and stand on the compassionate side of history. Join us in advocating for a more inclusive and equitable society for all.
