Mohammed Ben Sulayem to be removed as President of the FIA
The Issue
Mohammed Ben Sulayem (MBS) became the FIA president in December 2021. Since then he has brought Formula 1 (F1) into disrepute by failing to exercise his powers and obligations to uphold the integrity of the sport and enforce the regulations as written. He has lied to F1 fans and used his influence to benefit his favourite teams and drivers. He has allowed the fundamental foundations of the sport (the regulations) to become virtually meaningless through 'alternative interpretations' and 'loopholes' allowing teams to run illegal specification cars with impunity.
Under his leadership, F1 has become a joke of a sport and the universal measure for sports corruption and poor enforcement of the regulations. The responsibility of the regulator is to make motorsport safer, make sure the regulations are enforced and ensure sporting fairness is upheld. MBS has ignored these obligations in order to support the desire to improve brand value. He has abused his power to dismiss anyone who disagreed with him.
MBS has been associated with several scandals, including using FIA funds to influence voters to extend his term when the elections are due in 2025.
He changed the fundamental FIA statutes to restructure the organisation in a way that he has total power over all aspects including the Senate and Ethics Committee, which were previously independent. They are no longer able to investigate and challenge his actions.
There is also a clear Conflict of Interest since 2023 when his brother Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem who is CEO and Group Chair of DP World entered a major sponsorship deal with Mclaren F1. Mclaren then won 2 x World Constructors Championships attracting prize money paid by FIA of more than $250m.
Please make your displeasure known so that either he can be removed from post immediately, or the FIA voting members will be dissuaded from voting him back in for another term.
Over the past 18 months many senior FIA staff have either resigned or been sacked by MBS; some he claimed resigned have publicly clarified that they were indeed sacked. MBS cannot be trusted. He is a pathological liar who has overseen an era of FIA fraud and corruption.
His first decision as President was to defer any investigation into the highly contentious Abu Dhabi ending, in preference to him enjoying his success in being elected President. At that time millions of F1 fans were calling foul, but MBS didn't care. He decided to punish Lewis Hamilton for boycotting the award ceremony that saw an illegitimate WDC crowned.
He then oversaw and approved an investigation into the Abu Dhabi '21 race that concluded FIA made mistakes and the interpretation of the regulations was ambiguous, but it was too late to intervene, with no mechanism to change the classification. This is blatant lie as the FIA President has the authority under Judicial and Disciplinary rules (art 9.1.1) to refer the matter to the International Court of Appeal (ICA) who have exactly the power to amend race classifications. The ICA are the trusted and qualified body who are able to decide the 'correct' interpretation of the regulations. Yet whenever the regulations are unclear MBS let's unqualified FIA officials decide their preferred interpretation.
Instead of addressing the biggest controversy of a potentially illegitimate 2021 Word Driver Champion (WDC), MBS decided to hide the truth and focus his attention on petty, trivial regulation enforcement including drivers wearing the correct underwear, not wearing jewellery and not swearing.
When it was revealed that Red Bull Racing (RBR), the winners of the '21 WDC has breached the '21 cost cap MBS personally intervened to ensure that only lesser penalties were able to be applied by steering the conclusion to use an Accepted Breach Agreement (ABA), rather than referring it to the Cost Cap Adjudication Panel who could have deducted championship points and corrected the error that had crowned the wrong '21 WDC. The penalty had no impact on the '21 season that was breached, or the '22 season; it was applied incrementally over 12 months, not being fully served until the end of the '23 season 2 years after the season in which RBR breached the cost cap.
In January '24 the ICA confirmed the interpretation of the Safety Car regulations and the meaning of 'overriding authority'. It differed from that applied by the Abu Dhabi '21 Stewards when they incorrectly dismissed a valid Post Race Protest by Mercedes Benz AMG. To maintain the integrity of F1, MBS needed to use his power to refer the '21 WDC to ICA for their authoritive judgement. He instead endorsed official propaganda staying the ICA decision proved that Mercedes would've lost any appeal.
