Every year, more than 21,000 injured, sick and orphaned native animals rely on wildlife rehabilitation organisations for rescue, veterinary treatment and rehabilitation.

Most Western Australians assume there is a government-funded wildlife rescue system ready to help.

There isn't.

More than 80% of wildlife rescue, treatment and rehabilitation across Western Australia is carried out by just six charitable wildlife organisations, supported by around 90 smaller wildlife rehabilitation groups and licensed rehabilitators across the State.

Together, these organisations:

• Rescue thousands of injured native animals every year
• Operate wildlife hospitals and rehabilitation centres
• Answer tens of thousands of public calls for help
• Respond to bushfires, heatwaves, disease outbreaks and wildlife emergencies
• Support threatened species recovery
• Provide critical wildlife disease surveillance and biosecurity support
• Despite delivering an essential community service...

They receive ZERO ongoing operational funding from the Western Australian Government.

Every animal treated relies almost entirely on donations, fundraising, volunteers and community support.

Meanwhile, demand continues to grow.

Wildlife is increasingly impacted by:

• Vehicle strikes
• Domestic pet attacks
• Habitat loss and urban development
• Bushfires
• Heatwaves
• Pollution
• Emerging diseases such as avian influenza

At the same time, wildlife organisations face rising costs for veterinary care, staffing, infrastructure, insurance, compliance and emergency response.

The pressure has reached breaking point.

Two wildlife rehabilitation organisations have already closed in the past year, while many others report only limited long-term financial sustainability.

Without government support, more wildlife centres will be forced to reduce services, limit admissions or close altogether.

That means:

• More injured wildlife left to suffer
• Longer waits for rescue
• Increased pressure on veterinary clinics
• Reduced emergency response capability
• Poorer conservation outcomes
• Fewer places for the public to take injured wildlife

We can change this.

The Wildlife Rehabilitation Advisory Group of Western Australia (WRAGWA) has developed a practical, evidence-based funding proposal that would provide $3.5 million per year to strengthen wildlife rescue and rehabilitation across the State.

The proposal would support:

• Wildlife hospitals and rehabilitation centres
• Smaller regional wildlife rehabilitation groups
• Statewide emergency response coordination
• Volunteer support and training
• Wildlife disease surveillance and biosecurity
• The Wildcare Helpline

This is not about asking government to fund the entire sector.

It is about asking government to make a fair contribution towards an essential frontline service that thousands of Western Australians rely on every year.
