Call on the government to establish a secondary school in Newtownmountkennedy, Co. Wicklow

The Issue

In our pursuit for quality education, we, the residents of Newtownmountkennedy and surrounding locales, are fighting for the establishment of a secondary school in our community. Due to the expansion and population growth in Newtownmountkennedy, Roundwood and surrounding areas there is an urgent need for a secondary school in our area.

Newtownmountkennedy is now the 7th biggest town by population in all of county Wicklow but the only one in the top ten without a secondary school. With two primary schools now in the town and another in nearby Roundwood there is sufficient local demand to immediately fill a new secondary school.

Currently our young residents travel to Greystones, Kilcoole, Wicklow Town and further afield to attend secondary school. Those schools are at capacity and we want to ensure that all of our young people have a place in a local secondary school.

Having a secondary school in our locality will not only improve access to education, but also help in building a stronger, closer-knit community. It is therefore, a call to the Government and the Department of Education and Skills, to recognise our need and take immediate action.
