The Issue

One of two remaining examples of Art Moderne movie theaters in Rockford, IL, the Times Theater, was built in 1938. GT Partners LLC, a subsidiary of Joseph James Partners, is planning a historic renovation, restoring the theater into a multi-use entertainment venue. This multi-use approach to the theater is designed to maximize the potential of the theater and allow utilization of the theater performance space for multiple types of entertainment. The venue will seat audiences of 650 to 900 and be a needed mid-size entertainment venue which will attract more entertainment and variety to the Rockford region. The historic detail and Art Moderne design within the theater space and lobby will be maintained and restored.

From a financial feasibility standpoint, public support is necessary for this proposed restoration project. Therefore, GT Partners is applying for the Rebuild Downtowns and Main Street Grant through the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, which would provide the funding needed to begin the redevelopment.

The grant requires that the project has significant community support. We are asking anyone who has memories of good times at the Times Theater, has a desire to enhance the entertainment and cultural activities in Rockford, and would love to see this Rockford landmark restored, to assist us in acquiring this grant so we can save this historic theater. We love the Times Theater for its years of offering movies and concerts as well as its legacy as a central icon in the Rockford region. We do not want the theater to cease to exist or continue being another vacant building.

Please sign our petition and write a testimony about your memories at the Times Theater and your support of our project. Thank you for your help in bringing back the good times to the Times Theater.
