Who Is Demolishing All The Homes In N'Djamena, Chad??
The Issue
In N'Djamena, tens of thousands of residents have been forced from their homes. Families are given little or no time to relocate, and no opportunity to even dispute the evictions. Worse still, the forced evictions and demolitions often appear to be an exercise of political pressure enforced by Chad's president, Idriss Déby Itno.
Unless Chad hears a major outcry from the U.S. and the other countries it depends on most for receiving military aid and support, President Déby will allow this ongoing destruction to continue.
We know that the authorities in Chad are listening. They responded to our calls last time when we demanded that United Nations and European Union forces be allowed in eastern Chad to protect the Darfuri refugees. Now we need you to stand with us once again as we call for urgent action.
End housing demolitions and forced evictions in Chad!
We are discovering that many of the demolished homes belonged to the family members of political opponents of Chad's government. Such a blatant abuse of human rights and international law cannot continue with impunity.
All evicted families are entitled to adequate alternative housing and compensation for their losses. If President Déby and other Chadian officials are ever going to admit to these crimes, then we must let them know that we're watching their every move.
We want our message to ring in their ears and rattle the walls of their official offices. We will not back down until the human right to shelter and adequate housing is fulfilled in Chad!
