Women comprise over 50% of the population, yet are severely underrepresented in the leadership of our country: Women hold only 17% of seats in Congress and 24% of State Legislatures.

In honor of Mother's Day, we want everyone to celebrate motherhood by taking action to improve the lives of mothers across the country.

Moms need more women in government because female legislators more often address issues specifically related to mothers, child care, families.

According to CAWP, "elected women are working to make the agenda of legislative institutions more reflective of women's concerns stemming from their roles as caregivers in the family and in society more generally."

Women are more driven to focus on things like equal pay, children's health, maternity and paternity leave, family planning, and affordable child care.

For Mother's Day this year, will you sign your name below and declare your support for increasing the number of women in office for the sake of mothers everywhere?

Also, spread the Mother's Day love by sharing this great customizable video from MomsRising.org. The video is quite short and punchy, and features the mother of your choice in a faux news story as a winner of the "Mother of the Decade."

My Mom Needs More Women in Government.

Greetings,

This Mother's Day, I want to direct your attention to the severe and unacceptable under-representation of women in our government.

Women comprise over 50% of the population, yet hold only 17% of seats in Congress, 24% of State Legislatures, and are only 12% of our governors.

As a result, not nearly enough legislation is written to address the serious and unique needs of mothers, children, and families.

It's proven that elected women work to make the agenda of legislative institutions more reflective of women's concerns stemming from their roles as caregivers in the family and in society more generally.

In order to ensure that our government truly addresses the issues facing mothers across the country, I urge you to make recruiting and supporting women candidates a priority.

We need more women in government - on both sides of the aisle - working to ensure the lives of mothers take precedence in our policy making.
