Why This Is Important

Women comprise over 50% of the population, yet are severely underrepresented in the leadership of our country: Women hold only 17% of seats in Congress and 24% of State Legislatures.

In honor of Father's Day, we want everyone recognize the important role that women in government do to help families, and fathers, across the country.

Dads need more women in government because female legislators more often address issues specifically related to child care and families.

According to CAWP, "elected women are working to make the agenda of legislative institutions more reflective of women's concerns stemming from their roles as caregivers in the family and in society more generally." Fathers have many of the same concerns, especially as more families have two working parents.

Women legislators are more driven to focus on things like equal pay, children's health, maternity and paternity leave, family planning, and affordable child care.

For Father's Day this year, will you sign your name below and declare your support for increasing the number of women in office for the sake of fathers everywhere?

My Dad Needs More Women in Government

Greetings,

This Father's Day, I want to direct your attention to the severe and unacceptable under-representation of women in our government.

Women comprise over 50% of the population, yet hold only 17% of seats in Congress, 24% of State Legislatures, and are only 12% of our governors.

As a result, not nearly enough legislation is written to address the serious and unique needs of children, families, and fathers.

It's proven that elected women work to make the agenda of legislative institutions more reflective of caregivers concerns stemming from their roles in the family and in society more generally.

In order to ensure that our government truly addresses the issues facing parents across the country, I urge you to make recruiting and supporting women candidates a priority.

We need more women in government - on both sides of the aisle - working to ensure the lives of fathers and mothers take precedence in our policy making.
