Public assistance
(Welfare Reform Drug Testing)
With today’s Growing poverty and lack of jobs there is no doubt that we need public assistance for those in real need of funds. Not all welfare recipients are the “Honest Abes” the program was intended for, in fact a huge population of these people are drug dependent and abuse/ take advantage of the system. Why work when you can qualify for public assistance, food bank, low income housing, and other handouts.
It is no secret that many families who collect public assistance are capable individuals, and truly need a helping hand in bad times, but there are those with drug and alcohol addictions out there selling their funds for drugs.
I grew up in a small California town known for poverty and drug addiction, and personally know an arm’s length of families selling off their food stamps for penny’s on the dollar looking for their next fix. And the kids, what about them, “those shoes can last another few months, and besides, they get free lunch at school”. “Send them off to spend the night at their friend’s house, more drug time for me”.
Urine or Your out:
Drug testing for a job is second nature these days, but how about making “peeing in a cup” (drug screening) part of the application process for welfare, how about peeing in a cup every month to stay on welfare. . I pee in a cup to work; the government takes its share to give to welfare recipients……. Who then sells their food money for drugs, alcohol, cigarettes? Well, being on welfare for some is an occupation, and I say make them pee in a cup, “doing drugs? Then, no money honey.” The government might be concerned for the children of welfare parents, but the food money is getting spent anyway to support the drug lords. Spend the food money, and stand in line at the food bank, and eat the free government food at school lunch programs.
The three strike rule:
Strike one – “Ur-in”
Fail the drug test and the recipient must provide written documentation of signing up for drug rehabilitation program.
Strike Two – “Ur-in”
Must submit to random drug testing, and provide weekly proof of attending programs.
Strike Three – “Ur-Out”
Failure to apply for rehabilitation services, failure to attend the rehabilitation program, failure to submit to ongoing random drug testing, and or other rules mandated within this type of program will result in loss funds to the recipient. It can also lead to investigation of the household to rule in or out potential child negligence.
Final Thoughts:
There are many citizens already thinking about how they would reform welfare, some of which include drug testing, work subsidys, putting a cap on how many children qualify for welfare in one family, etc. Please post your ideas and thoughts in our comment section: http://goodforsociety.com/archives/223
The bottom line is that the country should have services available to help families during times of need, however should also set limits to prevent dependency on the system. By setting limits, drug testing, and providing programs to help individuals get out of the system is really what the idea of welfare “reform” is.
In closing:
It is obvious that the current welfare system needs reform, you could write a book on the topic. This article was written in hopes to open the eyes of Americans to see a problem, use their imagination and help envision a new welfare program, one that rewards good behavior, and eliminates those who wait for handouts to sustain their drug habits.
