Pakistan: Massive Scale of Need Outweighing Pledged US Support   :)

Ongoing conflict has forced approximately two million Pakistanis from their homes since last August. The U.S. State Department recently promised $110 million in emergency humanitarian relief. This is a positive step, but as RI advocate Patrick Duplat points out,"To stabilize the country, the U.S. must provide many more resources to support two million displaced Pakistanis and protect them from further harm."  While the U.S. will be providing $3 billion in military assistance to the Pakistani government, aid agencies are struggling to respond to the scale of the conflict. "The U.S. has a stake in this conflict, and it must understand that effective humanitarian aid is not just a moral imperative, but a strategic one as well," Duplat said.

One Year After Cyclone Nargis: Aid to Burma Still Crucial
Over a year has passed since Cyclone Nargis devastated the Burmese delta; however the Burmese people still require humanitarian aid. Many of those affected by the cyclone live in temporary shelters and do not have access to clean water. The U.S provided $75 million to aid victims of the cyclone and Refugees International is urging the U.S. to continue providing assistance. "Secretary Clinton indicated several weeks ago that the administration was undergoing a review of U.S. policy towards Burma. Now that it is clearly possible to provide aid inside the country transparently and effectively, any change in U.S. policy should reflect the needs of the Burmese people and show a strong and ongoing commitment to assist them," said Joel Charny, RI's Vice President for Policy.

A Celebration Three Decades in the Making

"My objective was to put as much good information out there as we possibly could...and maybe it would change the world."  With these words, Ted Turner accepted the McCall-Pierpaoli Humanitarian Award at Refugees International's 30th Anniversary Gala at the Embassy of Italy in Washington, DC, on May 7th.  It was a record-breaking evening -- over 450 people attended, raising over $700,000 in support of our work to bring solutions to refugee crises.  Also joining us at the celebration were Senator Sam Brownback and Congresswoman Nita Lowey - both of whom received RI's Congressional Leadership Award - as well as Christiane Amanpour, Ambassador Richard Holbrooke, Sam Waterston, Matt Dillon and many other luminaries.

Victory, Disguised by a Defeat

As RI's President Ken Bacon said in his blog post: "We live in a nation of second-guessers, and I am one of them."  Well, so are the rest of us.  If you've been following us on Twitter or Facebook, or watched Celebrity Apprentice due to our constant chatter about it, you probably know by now that our champ Annie Duke didn't win the final challenge.  But you may also know that, in the end, an astounding $700,000 was raised for RI, and Annie worked doggedly to shine a spotlight on our work. Her supporters have even launched a campaign to help raise the $250,000 she would have received from Mr. Trump if she had won.  These are all huge victories in our book, and we couldn't be more grateful.
