Cook County Coomissioner John Daley, Illinois Department of Transportation: Improve the intersection of Southwest Highway and Cicero Avenue

Cook County Coomissioner John Daley, Illinois Department of Transportation: Improve the intersection of Southwest Highway and Cicero Avenue

The Issue

The intersection and Southwest Highway and Cicero Avenue is a dangerous one. It is wider than an expressway with nine lanes, and the train tracks that stop traffic completely many times a day, In addition to ambulances heading to Christ Hospital. Right turns are allowed at all times of the day, and people rarely follow the posted speed limit of 30 mph although it is just two blocks away from a school zone. The intersection has not been updated with 40-year-old technology, even a simple walk button, making it difficult if not impossible for children, pedestrians, people with disabilities and the elderly to cross safely. More than 60,000 people pass through here daily, and it represents a significant barrier to accessing jobs, schools and services for people in Oak Lawn and Hometown.

We are requesting eight zebra style crosswalks, eight pedestrian signals with countdown timers, two new pedestrian islands, twelve truncated domes, and twelve curb ramps.  The Oak Lawn Village Board unanimously approved the recommendations in August of 2012, yet no improvements have been made to date and although Cicero Avenue from 95th St. southbound was redone last year, this year the plan is to SKIP the mile their intersection is located in and improve Cicero avenue at 87th Street going north.
