Bring Gender-Neutral Housing to Grounds!

Bring Gender-Neutral Housing to Grounds!
The Issue
On September 29, 2010, Tyler Clementi, a freshman at Rutgers University, hurled himself off of the George Washington Bridge. Tyler did not survive. Rather, he met his death.
Tyler took his life due to what had been a festering situation. Dharun Ravi, Tyler’s assigned roommate, had been uncomfortable living with a homosexual roommate. Dharun resultantly posted a video online of Tyler having a “sexual encounter” with another male. The end results were devastating to many. Both Dharun and Tyler’s actions will be remembered forever.
Let this moment in history never repeat itself. Show your support for Tyler. Show your support for your fellow peers and other LGBTQ members who had struggled or may currently be currently struggling with a challenging living assignment. Let us bring gender-neutral housing to UVA. This program, already in place at over 50 universities across the country, would allow for any student to live with another regardless of gender or sex.
The University of Virginia insists we as a student body have the power to mold the University into whatever type of community we want it to be. Together we can show UVA’s administration that we care about Tyler’s death, our peers’ current living conditions, and UVA’s future.
