Utah Latino Activist Needs Support to Stop Discrimination of Utah Latinos By Sandstrom's Bill
The Issue
There are two major bills addressing immigration reform in Utah: The Utah Compact and HB70
The Utah Compact takes the approach to find possible ways that immigrants who are already in the US can pay fines and work their way in the system legitimately. HB70 on the other hand is allowing police officers to ask for immigration papers there is probable cause. Rep. Sandstrom recently issued a revision of his bill that qualifies the classifications of crimes for which police could demand show of immigration papers.
In Utah, the majority of the population who would be invovolved in those stops are Latino. Many people in the state: Republican, non-Republican, Mormon-nonMormon have presented that the Bill targets Latinos.
Raul Lopez-Vargas, a former vice president of Centro Cívico, has wirtten a petition to present to the Mexican Consulate in Salt Lake City to say that they should halt LDS missionary visas and call on the Mormon Church to support immigration reform bill.
The plight for immigration reform bill is not of Raul Lopez-Vargas alone. Let us create our petitions in support of his cause/our cause in Salt Lake City.
Please support immigration reform
