On Oct 13th, 2009, Rep Gutierrez outlined in a rally in DC, some of the core principles that he wants to incorporate in his immigration bill. One of the core principles he mentioned is "Family unity as a cornerstone of our immigration system".
We have no indication from his office whether LGBT Families will be included in his immigration reform bill. However, we need your help to continue to keep the pressure up and let him know that it is VERY important to include ALL families in his bill for the immigration bill to be truly comprehensive.
In his press statement, he has also stated that "We simply cannot wait any longer for a bill that keeps our families together, protects our workers and allows a pathway to legalization for those who have earned it. It is time we had a workable plan making its way through Congress that recognizes the vast contributions of immigrants to this country and that honors the American Dream."
We need Rep Gutierrez to stick to his words and keep our families together. It is wrong that LGBT binational couples are forced to choose between love and country! It is wrong to forced our LGBT citizens to live in exile just so that they can be with their partners. Rep Gutierrez needs to stand up for ALL families and make sure that LGBT families are included in his immigration reform bill.
Rep Luis Gutierrez is a long time support of ending discrimination in our nation's immigration laws by supporting The Uniting American Families Act (H.R. 1024).
Make sure LGBT Families are included in your Immigration Reform Bill
Dear Congressman Gutierrez,
Thank you very much for your long time support of ending discrimination in our nation's immigration laws by supporting The Uniting American Families Act (H.R. 1024).
On Oct 13th, 2009 you outlined on the west lawn of the United States Capitol the core principles of a Comprehensive Immigration Reform bill. One of the core principles you outlined is "Family unity as a cornerstone of our immigration system".
You also stated that ""We simply cannot wait any longer for a bill that keeps our families together, protects our workers and allows a pathway to legalization for those who have earned it. It is time we had a workable plan making its way through Congress that recognizes the vast contributions of immigrants to this country and that honors the American Dream.
Based on the core principles that you outlined and your support of the Uniting American Families Act, I am urging you to include our LGBT families in the comprehensive bill that you are working on.
Under the current discriminatory immigration laws, LGBT Americans cannot sponsor their foreign-born partners for immigration and have to choose between leaving the United States and having their families torn apart.
Congress can remedy this injustice -- but only if it includes LGBT families in immigration reform. Reform is only truly comprehensive when it ends discrimination against all families.
Thank you very much for your time.
