Urge Ethiopia to allow demarcation without any precondition & lift the unfair sanction on Eritrea
The Issue
The Ethiopian Government’s war adventurism has been endangering all peace loving societies in the Horn of African region. Based on lies and fabrications from the Ethiopian government, any sanction of the UNSC on the peace loving people of Eritrea is considered as a death sentence by the UNSC on the 4-5 million people of Eritrea while Ethiopia is allowed to defy international laws and pursue its war adventurism.
All peace loving Eritreans & Ethiopians believe that Eritrea and Ethiopia will restore normalization of relations once the Ethiopian military, without any precondition, evacuate Eritrean territories and the government of Ethiopia allows the Eritrea-Ethiopia Boundary Commission’s "final-and-binding" ruling on demarcation to proceed with physically demarcating the border; and this will be seen as the first phase in building trust between these two sisterly countries. It also can be seen as a first sign of building trust between the government of Eritrea and the UNSC. Once demarcation is finalized, then the two governments can be brought to a dialogue to resolve their other differences step by step through dialog and negotiations until they reach on mutual understandings and eventually build trusts.
As the Ethiopian government is good at manipulating the super powers, the international community & the UNSC have been showing favoritism towards the Ethiopian government. The Ethiopian government spends millions a year on lobbyists to twist and manipulate the US government’s policy makers to its likings. The money for lobbyists comes from western countries aid; they have been playing the west with their own money. And according to the Ethiopian opposition groups, the Ethiopian government’s leaders have been using this foreign aid money to suppress and abuse their own people. Nazret.com put it this way “At the same time that Ethiopia's human rights situation has worsened, foreign donors have ramped up development assistance. Between 2004 and 2008, international development aid to Ethiopia doubled to more than US$3.3 billion annually, making Ethiopia one of Africa's largest recipients of international aid.” And according to the United Nations Development Program’s recent report, in the years 1990-2008, $8.4 billion foreign currency flowed out of the country in an illicit manner. No one opposes that Ethiopia receive development aid from doners, but we are concerned that there is no safeguard to ensure that the money will be solely used for development activities that benefit the Ethiopian people.
The Ethiopian government through lies and fabrications and taking advantage of its alliance with the US government’s “War-on-terrorism,” and through the help of lobbyists has been able to manipulate the UNSC impose an arms embargo on Eritrea. And the unfair arms embargo has already encouraged Ethiopia to openly begin its war campaign against Eritrea with the purpose of “regime change.” They have been on war armaments buying spree, and recently bought over 200 tanks from Ukraine.
On top of devastating their economies, the 1998-2000 war between the two sisterly countries consumed over 100,000 human lives and 650,000 people were displaced on both sides of the border; the war was conclude by a peace treaty in Algiers. In that treaty the case of Eritrean and Ethiopian was referred to an international law court that established a border commission, the Eritrea-Ethiopia-Border-Commission (EEBC). In the treaty it was agreed that the judgement would be "Final-and-Binding" and a sanction would be imposed to any side who doesn't abide by the judgement. The United Nations, The African Union, The European Union, The United Sates, and Algeria, signed as guarantors of the peace treaty. Accordingly, on April 13th 2002 the permanent court of arbitration in The Hague announced its "Final-and-Binding" decisions. Despite the fact of the agreement - to abide by the "Final-and-Binding" EEBC's decision - Ethiopia blocked the physical marking along the border by bringing preconditions. The Ethiopian government's defiance to abide by the rule of law and the UNSC's inaction on this particular case dimmed the hope of peace in the region to this day.
In a breach of the agreement to accept the border ruling as "Final-and-Binding" and to put physical markings along the border within six months after the ruling, the Ethiopian Prime Minister wants to enter into negotations before demarcation, but how can one be trusted in future deals and negotations while he is still dishonoring his previous deals/promises?
A new draft has been cooking by the government of Ethiopia to call the AU and UNSC to put additional sanction on Eritrean Diaspora and Eritrean economy.
As the government of Ethiopia has been promoting its hiden agenda to isolate and weaken Eritrea, we appeal to the UNSC not to rely and base its decisions on any kind of allegations prompted by the government of Ethiopia.
We call on the UNSC’s sense of justice to take the needed steps to repeal the unjust and unfair sanctions on Eritrea. We also appeal to the UNSC to urge Ethiopia to respect the "final and binding" decision of the Eritrea-Ethiopia Boundary Commission as well as to refrain from military adventurism that would endanger the lives and welfare of the peoples of Eritrea and Ethiopia and the rest of the region.
We challenge the UNSC to show its neutrality by taking concrete steps on the issues of our requests.
