Uncommon Courage: A Letter of Commendation

Normally I write to you about something in the news that I've been outraged by: abuses of power, corrupt government officials, citizens' voices being drowned out by special interests.

But today I want to do something different. I want you let you know about something that has inspired me.

During one of America's darkest chapters, when detainees at Guantanamo, Abu-Ghraib and other prisons were being subject to so-called "enhanced interrogation tactics," there were military and civilian officials who stood up and said, 'No. Torture is wrong and un-American.'

These brave men and women risked their careers to defend the ideals and principles upon which our great nation was built.

Won't you join me in honoring them by signing our letter of commendation?

We will deliver the letters -- with your signature -- and a "Common Cause Award for Uncommon Courage" around the 4th of July, the most patriotic of our nation's holidays.
You can read more about the actions taken by these heroes by clicking here. I hope you'll be as inspired as I have been by their commitment to our country and to basic human rights.

Their stories have reminded me to continue to have faith in our public institutions, because there are good people serving in those institutions standing up for what's right.

Please join me in honoring the "uncommon courage" of the officials who said "no" to torture.

After you add your signature to our letter of commendation, please forward this message to your friends.

Sincerely,

Bob Edgar

We the undersigned commend you for your uncommon courage in defending the rule of law and standing up against torture.

We’ve been horrified by photos and torture accounts from Abu-Ghraib, Guantanamo and other prisons. We’ve read about the torture that some Administration and defense officials condoned and ordered carried out. But we’ve also learned that you are among the few brave military and civilian officials who stood up for the rule of law and worked to stop the misguided policies and practices.

We echo the sentiments of U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder, who recently said, "In our current struggle against international terrorism, when others surrendered faithful obedience to the law to the circumstances of the time, it was the brave men and women in the JAG Corps who stood up against the tides, many times risking their careers to do so. We all can learn from their example."

We are heartened to know that in one of America’s darkest chapters, there were people like you defending the ideals and principles upon which our great nation was built.

We thank you for your integrity and bravery, your convictions and your principles.

As we head into this most patriotic of holidays, the Fourth of July, we honor you.
