Every 72 hours, somewhere in the world, a trans man or woman is murdered. Those stark statistics conceal an even greater epidemic of violence against the trans community in general. Individuals attacked on the street: people attacked in their homes; others afraid to leave their homes.

This is not exclusively the fault of the press: but through a constant diet of deliberate mockery and careless disrespect, the press have made the climate worse.

Even when they are outwardly sympathetic, they appear incapable of getting it right. A reasonably sympathetic piece by "respected" news agency Reuters shapes public opinion by illustrating the story with the image of a trans prostitute.

When the world in general demands respect for its own dead - especially when it comes to Poppy Day - it is not too much to ask for a little respect in return.
