Stop the Prosecution of Homosexuality in African Countries

Stop the Prosecution of Homosexuality in African Countries

The Issue

Homosexuality is illegal in 70 countries worldwide, and 38 are African. Only one African country has laws protecting gay rights and recognizes gay marriage.

In Mauritania, Sudan, and some parts of Nigeria and Somalia, homosexuality is punishable by death, and Liberia and Uganda are moving to pass similar bills that will punish homosexuality with the death sentence.

In 2009, Ugandan MP David Bahati introduced the infamous "Kill the Gays bill", but it was not passed due to threats of aid cuts from Western nations, like Sweden and Germany. However, the bill was re-tabled by David Bahati in 2011, and a similar one has been introduced in Liberia by former first lady Jewel Howard Taylor.

It was due to the public outcry condemning the abhorrent treatment of LGBT rights that killed the "Kill the Gays Bill" in 2009, and we cannot let it pass this time around either.

Malawian president Joyce Banda has already stated her intentions to legalize homosexuality, and this petition is equal parts support for her as well as an outcry against David Bahati, Jewel Howard Taylor, and their parliaments.

Everyone has the right to love without fear of ostracization, prosecution, or death.
