There are fewer than 60 Mexican wolves left in the wild and the Fox Mountain pack had one of only six breeding pairs identified. Therefore, placing a breeding female into captivity, as the Service has done, is detrimental to this species, will cause unnecessary suffering to her and her 5 pups, and is unacceptable to citizens like us. This mother wolf's incarceration will likely be deadly for her family and traumatic for her pack. In addition, the rancher purportedly affected by this wolf has been paid for his losses and capturing her now is an unnecessary appeasement to the public lands livestock industry, which must learn to operate with wolves. The federal government should not waste taxpayer money in this way, but should do its part for this endangered species by supporting policies such as grazing retirement and non-lethal tools and methods in order to permanently reduce wolf-livestock conflicts. In the name of protecting this species and doing what is just, we ask the Fish and Wildlife Service to return the mother of the Fox Mountain pack to her pups and life-long mate.
