Truth about Immigration Reform

Truth about Immigration Reform

The Issue

Did you know there are millions of  immigrants that have come into this country legally as a child, have adopted the American lifestyle, graduated from high school, began or finished college, and are now being asked to leave the only country they have ever known because their VISA has expired?  Think about it.  Your parents bring you to the United States at the age of 5.  You grow up American just as anyone else who was born in the US would.  You learn the language, eat the food, learn the customs, go to school, make friends, and become fully "Americanized".  One day, the only country you have ever known, tells you that you can no longer stay here.  This is what is happening to millions of people who were brought here as a child, through no fault of their own.  This is the reason Congress has been trying to pass a bill called the DREAM act.  This would allow these, now undocumented, immigrants to have a path to citizenship and avoid leaving the only home they have ever known.  The act says that an undocumented immigrant, brought into this country at a young age, would be able to gain citizenship if he or she has graduated from an American high school and is willing to either attend college, or join the US Military.

I believe if more Americans knew the truth about what this act is about, we would see that these kids did not have a choice to come here.  They have lived their lives as Americans and deserve he right to live here as a citizen.  Americans are not inhumane, and it is only through organizations such as change.org, that the truth about areas such as immigration can be told.  The DREAM act is something that is not widely discussed because it does not pertain to most of us.  However, I believe all kids deserve the right to stay in the only place they have ever known.  Who are we to take away their freedom.  I believe it is time for the message to get out to the people that not all immigrants came here illegally.  Not all immigrants need to learn English.  Can't we give hope to the one's who are educated and talented?  Can't we show the world that we are not wasting true talent by sending these people away?

It is time to stand up for what is right.  It is time to stop listening to politics and start thinking for ourselves.  It is time for humanity to win out.
