Michael and I rescue special needs, canine animal companions that have been abused and abandoned when they need a human the most. Our family currently consists of 8 dogs that include the blind, deaf, paralyzed and otherwise medically challenged. During the last two years we have had three other companions that transitioned when their quality of their lives was no longer suitable.
During these two years we have had pet insurance with Trupanion, currently at an expense of $705.20 per month, adjusting to $745.00 next month due to rate increases. At this time we are not a non-profit and we cover all expenses for these amazing companions out of our own personal funds. That expense has been in excess of $100k during that time.
Trupanion has repeatedly denied claims for our companions that we have appealed with the end result of them being approved.
Now, once again they have denied claims for our newest family member, Molly. She has required radiographs, MRI and the first of three surgeries to address issues with compressed discs in her spine. This condition was discovered and addressed after the initial waiting period of 30 days. One reason for their denial is incorrect records show a visit to the veterinarian during that period. When brought to my attention I submitted the correct records and explained that a clerical error resulted in the combination of two patients records. Even after contacting the CEO, Darryl Rawlings they are refusing to cover the claims.
During the course of being a client with them, they have denied several claims that were eventually all approved.
Time and again they promise to call or contact us and fail every time to do so in the time frame that they set forth.
The last appeal took more than 14 days to receive an answer and our contract indicates that we will have an answer in 14 days. When I addressed this with them they indicated the time frame would be based on receipt of all records; which they had in their possession for more than a month. They have made no effort to speak with me regarding the claims, except by sending form letters of denial.
It is clear that at this point we are nothing more than a dollar sign to them, and that is one reason it is important for people to sign this petition. It is time to let companies know that as consumers we vote with our dollars, and when a company begins to lack integrity and treats clients as a policy number they will lose that ever precious dollar.
We have addressed their concerns logically, without and consideration on their part. I also want them to know that we, and other supporters want them to take into consideration that facts AND the work we do, taking in special needs animals at considerable expense to ourselves. We invest some of that money in them to help care for these companions, yet they make us fight to get the benefits.
Approving the claims submitted for Molly is the right thing to do, because we have addressed all of their considerations AND because it is the right thing to do in order to help Molly have the most incredible life she can and deserves.
