Traveling with a Disablity

Traveling with a Disablity

The Issue

This petition is not to create a law or policy change. The petition is simply for awareness and persuasion. Most travelers with disabilities are unable to travel alone. They need to be accompanied by an aide, nurse, friend, or family member. This need poses an added difficulty to disabled tourists. This means that the given price is double for person with a disability. So companies do offer discounts, but typically at a maximum of 15%. As a minority persons with disabilities have some of the lowest income rates compared to that of other minorities. The petition is asking airlines and cruise lines to think about this and assist disabled travelers, by offering free companion tickets to persons with disabilities that require assistance.

Zach TrautenbergPetition StarterMy name is Zach and I am a 27 year old with a disability. I want to start off at looking at what a disability is. A disability is simply the inability to do something. If you look at in those terms everyone has a disability. For example most people cannot play the violin. The main difference is that not being able to play the violin does not interfere in your life. As I mentioned in the beginning I have disability. My disability is one that confines me to a wheelchair and leaves me with very minimal muscle strength. I write a blog called Independent & Accessible Living that is designed to help people live independently so that their inabilities do not stop them from participating in life. I plan to show examples and stories of things I do and learn that gives me the ability to do what I want to do and live a “normal” life.
