The town of Holbrook and surrounding areas have retail spaces that are empty. We do not need additional retail especially big box stores in the area. Our community is saturated with retail. This will have a negative impact on our areas enviroment as well.
Our school district (Sachem) which has been in crisis this past year and has to lay off over 200 teachers and support staff and drastically cut education programs such as GATE cannot handle the influx of new students into the district. We are already strapped, not being able to meet the needs of the current student population. Ho0w can we add more without a negative impact?
We also need to consider the impact this prject will have on small businesses that are already struggling against the gluttony of big box retailers.
If you travel around our community you will see examples of struggling retail. For example Sun Vet mall is not full, Gateway Plaza not full, countless of empty retail stores on Main Street in Holbrook and on Grundy Avenue, The closed down movie theater (Patchogue UA) on Sunrise Highway (Serota wants another theater built) and I can continue to go on and on.
We have an anticipated big box store coming into the old Attias Flea market site as well as BJs Wholesale coming to Sunrise Highway just east of us in the completely run down Bellprt Outlets South.
Traffic congestion is already terrible on Broadway and 454 this will certainly affect this area as well as near Costco and Sunvet Mall as well.
