We call on the NSW Government not to extend clearways on King Street, Newtown beyond the existing times.

The issue

  • The O’Farrell Government has flagged changes to clearways as part of their strategy to ease traffic congestion;

  • One of the areas that has been publicly reported for inclusion is King Street, Newtown;

  • King Street, Newtown is currently a clearway from Monday to Friday - Northbound between 6 – 10am and 3.30 – 5.30pm; and Southbound between 3 – 7pm;

  • King Street, Newtown is a thriving cultural, retail and entertainment destination, with high volumes of pedestrian traffic that benefit from slower moving traffic;

  • Many local businesses are owned by residents;

  • Moving parking away from King Street, will put traffic pressures on surrounding areas, including Camperdown, Enmore and Erskineville;

  • Any move by the O'Farrell Government to change clearway conditions on King Street, Newtown will negatively impact pedestrians, local residents and devastate local business along the shopping strip.
