The Issue
I am submitting this petition to Principal Kesman and Mr. Jones tomorrow at school.
It's not about the posters. It's about Hinsdale Central administration thinking they can make whatever rules they want because they get a paycheck. In reality, they have to follow rules too, and they broke them while also being unfair.
1) LT is allowed to MAKE signs.
2) According to LT, all students can bring in posters but inappropriate ones will be thrown out. I said Hinsdale Central has no control over this.. He said, "Is it enforceable? I don't know if whether it is or not. Some degree of difficulty" (Direct Quote from Principal Kesman to me).
3) "Under individual circumstances it's different. It's not about a supreme court case" (Principal Kesman). Well it is, constitutionally, citing the case of Tinker v. Des Moines, schools are only allowed to strip students away of their 1st ammendment rights (freedom of speech) if they prove that the posters would “materially and substantially interfere” with the operation of the school.
4) Takes away from the spirit of the game. Making signs is tradition at all colleges and high schools. It was only ever banned at one, UVA, and the ban was overrturned weeks later due to high volume of protest and unconstituionality.
5) "This ban is only for this game" (Dan Jones). Signs did not make LT kids go over the edge of last game. What caused an explosion was a high intensity game, a kid with a history of violence, and alcohol.
6) If they have posters and we don't, it's only going to frustrate our student section and will escalate after the game incidents.
7) "If an organization tries to restrict freedom of speech before it actually happens, instead of punishing it afterward, it must be backed up by a court as well as bear the burden of sueing" (New York Times co v United States 1971).
Personal Belief and my conclusion: This is a scapegoat for Hinsdale Central. They are blaming the after the game incidents on the posters we made which isn't right. They are doing this so if anything at LT happens, they can say they took action and preventitive measures. But at the cost of being unfair to us.
Either leave a comment agreeing or disagreeing with this petition and/or sign the petition.
All quotes are 100% accurate. I wrote them down immediately after them being said.
